On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, surrounded by family, fellow officers, city officials, and community supporters, Josh Cramer was officially sworn in as the 14th Chief of Police for the City of Bradenton. The ceremony, held at the historic R.B. “Chips” Shore Courtroom, was a proud and meaningful moment for the City—and for all who support our law enforcement family.

Chief Cramer brings more than 30 years of service in law enforcement, all of it rooted in the Bradenton community. A respected leader who rose through the ranks of the Bradenton Police Department, Cramer previously served as Assistant Chief and has continued his service as a reserve officer since his retirement in 2022. Most recently, he represented Ward 3 as a member of the Bradenton City Council. His selection marks the first time in 30 years that an internal candidate has been appointed to lead the department.

During his remarks, Chief Cramer shared a clear and heartfelt vision: “Do your job the right way—no shortcuts. Dig deeper and strive to do more for our community. Be kind to one another and to those we encounter on what may be the worst day of their lives.” It’s a guiding philosophy that reflects not only his leadership style but the spirit of service that defines Bradenton’s officers.

The ceremony also included a special moment when Elijah Smith, Chief Cramer’s mentee through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, led the room in the Pledge of Allegiance—underscoring the Chief’s commitment to youth engagement and community partnerships.

As the Manatee Hundred Club, we also want to extend our deepest thanks and appreciation to retiring Chief Melanie Bevan. After nearly a decade at the helm of BPD and a total of 39 years in law enforcement, her legacy of leadership, innovation, and community connection leaves a lasting mark. Her steady guidance has helped strengthen the department, and her mentorship of future leaders like Chief Cramer sets the stage for continued excellence.

We congratulate Chief Cramer and look forward to working alongside him in our shared mission to support the men and women who protect and serve Manatee County every day.

Welcome, Chief. The future looks bright.
