Honoring the Life and Service of Officer Zachary Butterfield

Facebook

It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of Officer Zachary Butterfield of the Bradenton Police Department, who died by suicide on Thursday, July 25, 2025.

Officer Butterfield was a dedicated public servant with a distinguished background in the United States Coast Guard, where he served both actively and in the Reserves. In July 2022, he brought his experience, leadership, and compassion to the Bradenton Police Department. As a member of the department’s SWAT Team and a recent recipient of the Life Saving Award, he was known for his strong work ethic, cheerful demeanor, and unwavering commitment to his community and fellow officers.

More than just a law enforcement professional, Officer Butterfield was a devoted husband and father of two young children, ages six and nine. His loss is felt deeply throughout our law enforcement family and across the Bradenton community.

Chief of Police Josh Cramer shared these heartfelt words:

“This is a heartbreaking time for our department. We are devastated to learn that one of our own was suffering in silence. Our hearts are with Zach’s wife, children, and all who knew and loved him. In times like these, we must lean on each other—and stand with the Butterfield family.”

As we mourn, we are reminded of the immense pressures and emotional toll that law enforcement officers face. To anyone who may be struggling: you are not alone. Help is always available.
