At the Manatee Hundred Club, we are proud to recognize and celebrate the bravery and commitment of our local law enforcement officers. Today, we honor Sergeant Brett Getman of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, who has been named the 2025 Deputy of the Year for his extraordinary actions during a life-threatening beach rescue.
On August 9, 2025, while on beach patrol alongside Deputy Vincent Bowman, Sergeant Getman was alerted to two swimmers in distress — caught in a powerful current more than 100 yards offshore. Recognizing the immediate danger, Sergeant Getman acted without hesitation. He called for backup from the Marine Unit, Coast Guard, and Beach Patrol — then removed his gear and entered the water himself.
With Deputy Bowman maintaining visual contact from shore, Sergeant Getman swam out to reach one of the struggling swimmers, keeping him alert and guiding him safely back to land. As they reached the shoreline, Beach Patrol teams arrived. Sergeant Getman quickly redirected their efforts to the second individual still in the water, ensuring both lives were ultimately saved.
Both individuals were treated at a nearby hospital thanks to the swift, coordinated response — and most importantly, thanks to the courage and leadership of Sergeant Getman.
His quick thinking and selfless actions reflect the very best of what it means to serve and protect. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Sergeant Getman on this well-deserved honor, and our sincere gratitude to all the deputies who serve our community with courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication.
Congratulations, Sergeant Getman — and thank you for being a true example of heroism in action.
