We are honored to spotlight Chief Scott D. Tyler of the Palmetto Police Department, a seasoned law enforcement professional whose career spans nearly three decades. Chief Tyler began his journey in law enforcement after completing the Manatee Vo-Tech Police Academy in 1994, following a successful stint as a co-owner of a property maintenance business. His experience in business equipped him with vital skills in customer service, effective communication, and time management, which have served him well throughout his career.
Chief Tyler joined the Palmetto Police Department in 1995 and has risen through the ranks, serving in various roles including patrol officer, community policing officer, crime prevention specialist, and deputy chief. He was appointed Chief of Police in 2015 and has since focused on the overall safety of the city and its residents. His commitment to ensuring his officers have the resources they need is a testament to his leadership style.
Throughout his career, Chief Tyler has achieved numerous milestones, including active participation in the accreditation process, which culminated in the department receiving its Excelsior designation in 2022. He has been recognized for his dedication to community relationships and was honored as the Palmetto Police Department Officer of the Year in 1996. Chief Tyler is also deeply involved in education, serving as an instructor at the Manatee Technical College Law Enforcement Academy and chairing its Advisory Board.
Facing challenges such as modernizing equipment on a limited budget and addressing recruitment and retention, Chief Tyler has leveraged innovative budgeting strategies and encouraged his officers to participate in decision-making. His approach fosters a sense of ownership among his team, helping to navigate the complexities of today’s law enforcement landscape.
Community engagement is a priority for Chief Tyler, who trains his officers in community policing techniques, empowering them to build strong relationships with residents and businesses. Through outreach programs with local schools and organizations like the Boys & Girls Club, all Palmetto officers actively practice service-led policing, ensuring that community concerns are addressed.
